Brief history of the new
capital: |
Astana (us-tuh
NUH) is the capital of Kazakhstan. The name of the city is
translated from Kazakh as ‘the capital city’. It became capital
in September of 1995. The population of the city is 350 thousand
people.
Like many cities in Kazakhstan, Astana changed its name several
times. In the 1800s, it was called Akmola, according to the most
popular version it means ‘a white tomb’. The name was given by
the Russians who founded a fortress with this name. By 1870s
Akmola was a place where merchants from Russia, China and
central Asia came to trade cattle and agricultural products. It
is worth mentioning that the city is located on the legendary
Silk Road.
After the Great October Socialist Revolution and establishment
of the Soviet power, the name was Russified and Akmola became
Akmolinsk. In 1961, Khrushchev insisted on changing its name to
Tselinograd (the city of virgin lands) because at that time a
lot of young people according to the plans of the Communist
Party were sent to Northern Kazakhstan to explore the rich
steppes of Kazakhstan to increase production of wheat in the
Soviet Union.
In 1992 after Kazakhstan became independent, the city regained
its original name Akmola, and in 1998, it received its new name
Astana. The governments, especially the president are trying to
make Astana a true capital of the huge country. Their efforts
sometimes lead to a lot of waste. The climate is very harsh; the
humidity is high because of the underground waters. Therefore,
special materials are needed, but it is not always considered.
Astana is still remaining just a political center of the
country. It will probably take a while before it becomes a major
tourist attraction. However, the potential of the former capital
Almaty was almost exhausted (the valley where it is situated is
too small to accommodate the growing population and business
community) and transferring the capital to Astana was quite
reasonable. Today Astana boasts new modern government and
business offices, five star hotels and a number of good quality
hotels to accommodate visitors, apartment blocks matching the
European standards, beautiful squares and boulevards, modern
roads as well as river promenade on both banks of the River
Ishim.

Central Asia stretches
from Afghanistan to north towards Western Siberia, from
the Caspian Sea to Mongolia, and the new capital is just
in the center of this perspective area as a destination
for investment flows. At the junction of communication
lines from the Pacific coast to Europe in future it is
potentially capable of becoming a big transit corridor
able to promptly respond to transportation and
communication signals of next centuries”. By these words
the President of Kazakhstan, Mr. Nursultan Nazarbayev,
summarized strategic development for a new capital of
sovereign Kazakhstan at the meeting devoted to
Independence Day of Kazakhstan on December 13, 1997. 32
criteria were applied to identify a new location and
they are illustrative of key peculiarities of this
region: climate, environment, seismic conditions, social
and political indicators, transport infrastructure,
labor resources. Astana is only nine years old,
historically it is infancy but it has already gained a
solid position on the world political map. This is the
most convincing and most important victory of Astana, as
prosperity of Kazakhstan and its capital first and
foremost depends on its international image.
Contribution of Astana to maintaining peace and concord
in the region works on its prestige. Astana is an
important international political center, initiator of
new constructive ideas and projects. Kazakhstan fosters
harmonious interaction of more than two cultures,
bearers of which due to some historical events found
themselves in this hospitable land. Currently, in the
third millennium, Kazakhstan has entered a new
international dialogue, calling for tolerance and
respect to different heritage and different religion.
Astana is appealing not to spend time and efforts on
conflicts, but to understand that major value is piece
in your own home. Capital of Kazakhstan offered itself
as a platform for this new constructive
inter-confessional talk over the round table. “We stick
to principles of tolerance, concord and cooperation in
our foreign policy activity based on the idea of
multi-vector, integration and consolidation for the sake
of global and regional security, justice and progress”,
- this is what the Head of the State said in his speech
to First Congress of World and Traditional Religions
which took place in Astana in September 2003. This
initiative made the world community begin to speak about
Kazakhstan again.
Kazakhstan is at the junction of roads and is something
like a bridge between Europe and Asia which determines
foreign political and economic priorities of the
country. Nowadays the capital is in the center of the
country which is located in the center of Eurasia. That
is why many people familiar with Kazakhstan speak of
Astana as a symbol of national and territorial identity
of the state. Astana makes quite concrete steps towards
implementation of the Eurasian idea: numerous meetings
of Heads of Commonwealth countries, multilateral
relationships, and economic links. New capital is a
symbol of openness to the world. Therefore, UNESCO
decision of 1999 to award “City of Peace” title to
Astana seemed quite logical. Except geographic factor
due to growth of international authority Astana is
becoming a real heart of Eurasia. The city became a
center of communication links, railway, automobile and
air lines. And we can be sure that preserving a high
rate of development the young capital of Kazakhstan will
for sure become a largest international transport
junction connecting Europe and Asia. |

Climate |
Upon leaving the gentle
southern autumn, that delights the eyes with shades of
ochre and the soft falling of the leaves, you can arrive
in the wintery capital with all its beauty. The
intensity of the cold in the capital is well known far
from Astana: blizzards, snowdrifts… But those who end up
in Astana in the winter still say that the snow-covered
capital is marvelous. Cross-country skiing along the
Ishim River, the natural-sized ice rink on Grebnoy Canal,
the crunching snow, which, strange as it might seem is
quite wet, and is perfect for making a snowman; and then
of course we can’t forget the famous ice city… And of
course the air which you can almost drink.
Astana is open to all the winds, which the visitor
cannot miss. But in the winter its presence seems like
the obvious, like an element of this snowy attraction
that can’t be removed; in the summer the wind carries
long-awaited cool. The wind in the capital has an
unpredictable character: you never quite know where it
will come from. According to statistics, in January, the
wind usually blows from the northeast. Because of that,
the winter here is cold and long, there is little
precipitation, and at times quite frigid. The length of
the frost period is 245 days per year, and the length of
the winter is 5 months, and sometimes close to 6. The
constant snow cover usually appears in the middle of
November and remains for 130-140 days. The average
temperature in January is -17° C (with a high of -14).
The absolute minimum some winters can reach -40° C. The
average annual wind speed in Astana is 5 m/s. The
highest wind speed is in March (6 m/s), and the minimum
in August (4 m/s). The average amount of days in the
year with high wind speeds (higher that 15 m/s) is 40.
The highest number of days with such wind speeds is 87.
In Astana, the maximum recorded wind speed, 36 m/s,
occurs once per 20 years.
The climate here is severe continental. Autumn is often
accompanied by rain. At the end of March and the
beginning of April, the late, but amazingly beautiful
spring arrives. During this time, the steppe is all in
bloom with irises and tulips. The moderately warm summer
consists of mostly sunny days. Shilde, which in Kazakh
refers to the hottest 40 days of summer in the south of
Kazakhstan, does not occur in Astana. The average in
July ranges from 25 to 30° C. When on a nighttime
promenade in the capital, it’s best to take something
warm with you: a light jacket or sweatshirt. That being
said, the cool summer nights mean restful sleep. By the
way, the summer nights in Kazakhstan can be compared to
the laurels: the sun sets late and rises early. |

Baiterek Monument |

|
The monument « Astana -
Baiterek » where everything is symbolic - the gold sun
in a crone, and height of 97 meters, and the internal
architecture divided into three zones personifying three
bases of a universe, is known far outside Kazakhstan.
This "poplar" (in Kazakh language, baiterek) made of
metal, glass and concrete is a unique among
architectural ideas and grandiose with performance:
metal design with height of 105 meters, weight over 1000
tons stands on five hundred piles. For the first time in
the world the sphere with diameter of 22 meters and
weight of 300 tons made of the glass "chameleon" that
changes color depending on a sunlight, "has taken"
record height. The monument «Astana - Baiterek» - is a
symbol of a new stage in life of Kazakhstan - with its
arrangement and a composite structure it expresses
cosmogony representations of ancient nomads. The idea of
creation of this unique construction, which has no
analogues in the world, belongs to the President of
Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbaev. Towering above young
capital, it serves as an architectural symbol of
renewal, a symbol of Astana, a symbol of Kazakhstan. |

Fantastic sight of the
left bank of Astana since March, 22, 2005 became an
original frame of new capital place of interest -
Central mosque "Nur-Astana". It looks here rather
unexpectedly, but harmonious. Grace of the East is
thought over and twisted in grace of glass, concrete,
steel, a granite and alucobond. Scales of the left coast
are sustained also: on almost four thousand squares of a
mosque five thousand believers can uplift a pray, and
more two thousand parishioners - on the area in front of
it. Four minarets, 62 meters each one, are concentrated
on eternal things, and the domes covered with aluminum
with gilding, allow a business part of city to not
forget about soul. |
