Tour 5
- Rock Art Gallery Tamgaly |
|
Rock Art Gallery
Tamgaly is a unique cultural monument, which represent
several historical periods, over approximately 20
centuries. Tamgaly Gorge lies 170 km northwest of
Almaty, in the Anrakhai mountains.
These are low ancient mountains formed of solid rocks
and carved with gorges. At their foot stretch chains of
burial mounds, which belong to many different ages and
prove that the gorge was inhabited for many centuries.
4 thousand petroglyphs were discovered in Tamgaly in
1957.The most ancient petroglyphs, which are believed to
date from the Bronze Age, are especially numerous and
diverse. The complete reflection of the cult of the Sun
in the engravings is connected with the sanctuary
existing at that time in Tamgaly. There were over 20
anthropomorphic pictures of sun-headed creatures –
ancient portrayals of God, and six pictures of chariots
found.The dancing
figures dates from the Bronze Age and were connected
with the Cutoff Fecundity. Several scenes were
discovered that showed a connection to this cult: erotic
scenes; pictures of ritual and huntdances; and pictures
of wild animals such as boar, oxen, mountain sheep,
deep, horses, ante lopes-saigacs, wolves, snow leopards,
and foxes. |
 |
|
The next group of petroglyphs dates from the Age of
Early Nomads. This age is represented by the peculiar
Saka (Skifian) styled compositions of animals and
people. Animal fight scenes, figures of mountain sheep,
deep, horses, and snow leopards were conveyed in the
typical skifian-siberian animalistic style.
One of the main themes of the rock art during the Turk
period became the image of the horseman / warrior.
Medieval Turk horsemen / warriors can easily be dated.
To this period belong the portraits of footarchers,
